NACOGDOCHES, Texas - This past weekend we had our conference tournament at SFA. We spent the week preparing to play Sam on Friday night, and on Thursday night we had some barbeque at coach's house.
Friday morning we unfortunately went to classes if we had them, and then proceeded to Auntie Pasta's for our pre-game meal. It was delicious as usual, and right after we finished we headed for the gym to get ready to go. Things were a little hectic when we got there, as there was no locker room for us to get ready in and there were people everywhere. Eventually we were able to get ready, and then we watched a little bit of the Texas State and Northwestern game before we drove over to Shelton for our passing time. In warm-up, everyone seemed pumped and ready to go, but once the game started, we came out a little slow. The match was a good one, going to five, but we ended up losing on the first night of the tournament. We did not play terrible - it was just not enough to pull out a win. Thus concludes our season, and my career.
Sunday afternoon, several of us went to watch the championship match between Lamar and Texas State. It was a good match and they went to five. I tried to be civil and not root for one particular team, but as the match intensified, I could not help but do just that. If you have read my past entries, you should probably know whom I was going for. Lamar won, and it was pretty tough watching them celebrate yet again on our court. What is more, they apparently yelled "our house" in their huddle after they won. It will never end. I could go into a discussion of class and puerility, but that would be redundant, not to mention futile, so I will abstain.
It is a bummer we had to end the season this way, but I have no room to complain having three rings on my fingers and a first-round victory in the NCAA tournament. That is something few people have a chance to say. There are things that I will miss about playing volleyball at SFA, and it has been quite an experience. To all of my former teammates, I love you all. To our fans, thank you for your enduring support over the years. As for me, I am ready to move on with my life - starting in New Zealand next semester with Ray. Hopefully I will learn how to surf and not get eaten by a shark.
Well, my friends, I know you will miss my wonderful weekly entries, but in words from Rodger's and Hammerstein's the Sound of Music: "The sun has gone to bed and so must I. So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye." Swendig, out.
Word of the week: Copious - adj. abundant in supply or quantity Ex: I am very much looking forward to the copious freedom I will have now that I will not have volleyball.
BONUS: Fun with roots! Copious comes from the Latin "copia" meaning plenty. As it is the season, think of a cornucopia, or literally a horn of plenty.
