NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Wednesday evening we left for San Marcos, to play in our last matches against the West until the SLC tournament. We watched "The Strangers" on the bus, and it was just about as scary as it was when I saw it in the Student Center (not scary at all), but apparently others on the bus found it quite frightening.
Thursday morning we got up and ate breakfast at the hotel, and then it was time for some shopping at the outlet malls! We had a couple of hours to shop, some taking advantage of the time more than others, and when it was time to eat, we all walked over to the Cracker Barrel for our pre-game meal. After the meal, we briefly went back to the hotel and discussed what we were to do in preparation for the match. Finally, it was time to head to the gym. The match commenced at 7pm, and we started out very strong, taking care of the Bobcats in the first two games. However, the 10-minute break in between games two and three proved to be the catalyst for our downfall. We came out flat in game three, and we had them in games four and five but failed to finish.
After a long, disturbing wait in the parking lot, we went and got some food and then headed back to the hotel. It was a late night, and a relatively early morning, as we left the hotel around 9am for practice at Texas State. On a positive note, it was Halloween, and Matt Lauer had a funny costume on the Today Show. Practice was a little rough - I was still exhausted from the previous night, and my legs were not really in proper working order. But, we practiced hard and before we knew it, it was time to shop again. Oh yeah, I will say that I was slightly jealous of Texas State because they got to practice in Halloween costumes.
I was mentally in the mood for shopping, but physically, I just wanted to sit down and rest the old walking sticks. I went shopping with Jami, and in just about every store I would find somewhere to just sit down. It makes me tired just thinking about it. After shopping, we hopped back onto the bus and set off for Arlington. On the bus we had show and tell of our purchases to occupy our time in Austin traffic. We also had another chapter of our ongoing northerner versus southerner discussion on whether Lo's hat was called a toboggan, beanie, sock cap, or stocking cap. Maybe there were some more names but I do not remember. Eventually we watched "Super Troopers" and ate at Luby's. I have expressed my opinion several times in the past about cafeteria-style food, but this time, it was actually pretty good. Maybe I was just extremely hungry. In honor of Halloween, Ari, Erin, and Sydney Ellis trick-or-treated on the bus.
After what seemed like one of the longest bus rides ever, we arrived at the Sleep Inn in Arlington, right across the road from the Judge Roy Scream. I think we all watched some sort of scary show or movie on TV at the hotel, but there were no valiant attempts to scare anyone. We were able to sleep in at the Sleep Inn on Saturday, and at 11am we checked out and went to eat at Mimi's Café.
When we were done eating, we walked around for a little bit and then went to the auditorium - excuse me - gym. Lo and I had fun trying to come up with politically-themed phrases for the board, playing with the Mavericks of UTA, and the mavericks of McCain-Palin, but none were satisfactory and we settled for "mow the Mavericks." The match began at 4pm, and ended about an hour and a half later. We beat UTA in three, and went to one of my all-time favorites, Chipotlé, for dinner. Yum! We listened to/tried to block out the UT-TTU football game on the way home, not knowing that it would have such an incredible finish.
This week we play our last two regular-season home conference matches against Northwestern State on Thursday and Central Arkansas on Saturday.
Word of the Week: Discommode - v. cause (someone) trouble or inconvenience Ex.: The Demons and Sugar Bears will not discommode the Ladyjacks this week.
