NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Last week we started our stretch of games versus teams from the West. Unfortunately, I was unable to play in either game, as I was still hobbling around on my ankle. Wednesday night we played A&M Corpus Christi at home. There was a good crowd, who rightly decided that Ladyjack volleyball would be more exciting than watching the final presidential debate live. The Islanders proved to be an energetic team, but it was to no avail, as we beat them in three quick games.
Thursday and Friday we had practice as usual, and we left late in the afternoon on Friday to head for good ol' San Antone. Our bus driver, Alvin, required a passport and a small fee to ride on the bus. Maybe that was just me... We watched a few movies on the bus including "Disturbia," which is apparently scary judging by the screaming that was going on. There was also something funny up front as there was a lot of laughing and clapping that kept the back of the bus unable to take a nap. When we got to the hotel, we had our usual healthy late night snack - this time it was apples!
Saturday morning we were able to sleep in - oh wait, the fire alarm went off at 8am. I know you are thinking that that is not that early, but it is at that point where you are not quite ready to wake up, but it is still hard to go back to sleep. Many of us, being accustomed to late night or early morning fire alarms going off at the dorms, were reluctant to get out of bed and some of us even opted to just ignore the alarm. Others, however, jumped out of bed and took the alarm seriously. Personally, Sydney Milburn roused me out of bed, seeing that I had chosen to put a pillow over my head, but as soon as we opened the door, the alarm turned off. The event proved to be somewhat symbolic of the day, as we would soon discover.
A few hours later, it was time to get up and go eat our pregame meal at everyone's favorite - la Madeleine. We finished eating a little before we needed to go to the gym, so we browsed the nearby stores, including a fun Halloween store. After that, we left for the gym. The locker room we were in had a really nice TV and saloon-style swinging doors, so we were naturally entertained.
During our warm-up, band members and other people were filtering in and out of the gym as if it were a Star Wars symposium. The match eventually started, and from the beginning it looked rough. We dropped the first two games easily, and while the third game looked somewhat more promising, we still lost. There is not much to say about it, really, since we did not play even remotely close to what we are capable of. Just as we were awoken from our slumbers by the alarm, so too were we awoken by our loss. We are forced to accept the loss, but we will do our absolute best to ensure that such as catastrophe does not happen again.
Word of the Week: Illustrious - adj. well known, respected, and admired for past achievements Ex.: The illustrious Ladyjacks always prevail in the end.
