NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks will finish up its 10-game road swing with a three game series against the Baylor Bears in Waco this weekend. Last week, SFA snuck out of Monroe, La., last weekend with one win in three games. After giving up the first two to the Warhawks, 3-1 and 7-2, SFA was able to come away with an 11-10 win in Game 3. The 'Jacks hold a 2-4 record on the year.
The games will be played at Baylor Ballpark and will start at 6:30 p.m. Friday, at 3 p.m. Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Bears: Baylor snapped a season-opening three-game skid Tuesday night with a 10-4 win over the Texas State Bobcats in Waco. The Bears lost all three games over the weekend against Houston, Rice and Vanderbilt in the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park. BU heads into the weekend with a 1-3 record. Sophomore Ben Booker has posted a .308 batting average, with four hits, one run scored and two RBI in four games. From the mound, Randall Linebaugh has a 2.25 ERA after making one start and throwing four complete innings. He gave up five hits and one run while striking out two and taking the loss in the outing.
Against the Bears: The Lumberjacks are winless against the Baylor Bears with an 0-15 all-time record. Last season, Baylor swept the 'Jacks in its home opener. SFA lost 9-2, 8-3, and 3-1 that weekend.
The Coaches: SFA's Donnie Watson is in his second season at the helm of the Lumberjacks baseball program. In his time with the 'Jacks, Watson has put together a 17-45 (.274) record. In his first season with SFA, Watson's troops posted a 7-23 SLC record. Baylor's Steve Smith has put together a 454-287-1 (.611) slate in 13 years with the Bears.
Up Next: The 'Jacks' busiest week of the year comes up next week when they play five games. However, SFA will get to play four of the five games in the friendly confines of Jaycees Field after starting the season playing 10 games on the road. The Lumberjacks will face the Centenary Gents in their home opener Tuesday at 2 p.m. before traveling to Houston to take on Prairie View A&M Wednesday at 6 p.m. They will then conclude their week with a three-game set against Youngstown State in Nacogdoches.
