After rave reviews SFAJacks.com is bringing back the 2007 volleyball player's diary, this year with junior outside hitter Shelly Swendig.
My, my, my, what a weekend. We left on Thursday morning to go to Arlington for what many would call the Southland Conference Game of the Week, as two of the three undefeated teams in the conference set up shop to duke it out in a battle of speed, endurance and wit.
We exited at Carrier Parkway in order to eat at the always-delicious Boston Market, where we shared a few laughs and pondered the ever-popular question of how skinny is too skinny. With our bellies stuffed, but our minds hungry for a big win, we headed to the UTA campus. We arrived a little early, so we enjoyed a delightful stroll around the campus. As usual, Ash made a few new friends on the way, and we got an exclusive tour of their brand new rec center (which doesn't hold a candle to ours, I might add).
By 7 o'clock, we were all ready to get the party started, and so were their fans. We started out slow all three games, but we still managed to sweep the undefeated Lady Mavs. After some chatting with parents and friends, we hopped back onto the bus to go to San Marcos.
Friday was a phenomenal experience. We got to sleep in, had a short practice, and then had about four hours to shop at the glorious outlet malls of San Marcos. Needless to say, we all made a few purchases. After the shopping, we ate at Cracker Barrel, where Bri got a face full of whipped cream due to the cunning of Jami. Even the waitress found it funny.
Saturday we were looking to continue our streak, as we were to face the Bobcats of Texas State. For those of you who are unaware of this, we loathe Texas State, and the feeling is mutual for them as well. Any time we play, you can count on an intense, often grueling match. This match was no exception. We dropped the first game and won the next three. In the fourth, and what would be the final game, we were down 29-26, but managed to come back and finish the game with a score of 35-33. I think we gave our fans heart attacks - even the ones following the action on the computer.
Props to my other roommate, Jami Hill, for being named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week two weeks running. Jeepers my roommates are good at volleyball!
This Friday at 7, we'll play another rival, the Sam Houston Bearkats, which will be our only match of the weekend. This will also be our chance to tie the record at 58 for most consecutive regular season conference wins in a row.
Word of the Week: chagrin - n. distress or embarrassment at having failed or been humiliated.
Ex: The Ladyjacks beat UTA in a three-game sweep, much to the chagrin of the previously undefeated Lady Mavs.
