
'Jacks Look to Continue Win Streak

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team (11-39/3-21 SLC) enters the week riding its longest winning streak of the season, with consecutive victories against No. 10 (Baseball America Top 25 poll) Houston and two against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. SFA will look to extend that streak to four games Friday when the 'Jacks return to Southland Conference action to face Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game series. The Lions are 18-31 (.367) on the season and have lost three straight and five of their last seven. Friday's game will begin at 3 p.m., while the Saturday and Sunday games are slated for a 1 p.m. start. All three games will be played at Jaycees Field.
SFA vs. the Lions: The Lumberjacks are 1-0 (.500) all-time against Southeastern Louisiana. The two meetings between the two schools came during the 1994 season. The 'Jacks won a 5-4 10-inning decision in Nacogdoches, but dropped a 9-1 game in Hammond, La.
Jaycees Field: The Lumberjacks will be playing all their home games at Nacogdoches City Park's Jaycees Field, until the new on-campus facility is completed. Jaycees Field is where the `Jacks played their home contests through the 1995 season. Since joining the Southland Conference in the 1987-88 academic year, SFA recorded a 79-109 (.420) tally at Jaycees Field. The `Jacks' best season at Jaycees Field came in 1988 when SFA recorded a 15-2 (.882) mark. The most home victories by a Lumberjack team during that stretch was 17 in 1993, when SFA recorded a 17-9 (.654) home record. The `Jacks are 9-12 (.429) at home this season.
Win Streak The Lumberjacks are currently riding a season-high three-game win streak. It is the longest Lumberjack win streak since SFA closed out the 1993 season with a series sweep of Nicholls State.
In Lehmann's Terms: Freshman Erich Lehmann is coming off a tremendous week on the mound. Lehmann got the start against No. 10 Houston and pitched 4.0 strong innings surrendering five hits and two runs, while striking out three Cougars. He left the game with the scored tied, but the 'Jacks were able to rally for a run in the seventh to take the lead and eventually win the game. Lehmann returned to the mound Sunday to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Lehmann got the win going 9.0 innings, scattering eight hits, while surrendering only two walks and no runs. He also struck out nine batters. The victory over the Islanders marked his first-career shutout and complete game.
Long Relief: Freshman Jared Schrom recorded the biggest victory of his young career last Tuesday against Houston. Schrom pitched five scoreless innings against the Cougars giving up only one hit and recorded the win.
Heating Up: Junior Kyle Freeman took a liking a to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi pitching over the weekend. Freeman went 5-for-8 (.625) at the plate against the Islanders with a run batted in and two runs scored.
Tough Luck: The Lumberjacks have been involved in 15 one-run games this season. Of those games, the 'Jacks are 6-9 (.400), which includes a 3-2 victory over 10th-ranked Houston.
On Deck ... The Lumberjacks will wrap of the 2006 season Thursday, May 18 through Saturday, May 20 in Huntsville, Texas against Sam Houston State. The Thursday and Friday games are slated to begin at 7 p.m., while Saturday's game will begin at 1 p.m.
