Taylor, Kirby Sign with `Jacks Baseball

NACOGDOCHES - Zack Taylor and Kai Kirby will be joining the Lumberjack baseball team for the 2008 season as the duo signed national letters of intent during the early signing period, announced SFA head coach Donnie Watson Tuesday morning.
Taylor, a senior at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston, has spent a year on Strake's varsity baseball team. The right-hander posted a 3-0 record with one save as a junior. He also played summer baseball with the Columbia Angels of Premier Baseball as a reliever, garnering one win and only allowing one earned run through 26 innings. An honor student at Strake, Taylor is also lettering in swimming.
"Zack is a power pitcher who will bloom in college," said Watson. "He's throwing in the low 90s right now and has an above average breaking pitch. He needs to work on his change-up, but he doesn't need it right now. He's an effortless pitcher, very solid."
Kirby will transfer to SFA from Seward County Junior College in Liberal, Kan. The Chickasha, Okla., native, was the Saints starting center fielder in 40-of-60 games played. Kirby was second on the team in batting average as a freshman hitting .388 and drove in 21 runs. Kirby, a left-handed outfielder, recorded a .475 on base percentage and was a tough out at the plate with 18 walks and only 15 strikeouts. In addition, Kirby was named to the Fall 2005 and Spring 2006 Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
"Kirby has unbelievable speed," Watson said. "He's a great leadoff hitter with the occasional power and has great potential. He set his high school record for stolen bases in a season and for a career and is well on his way to doing that at Seward County."
