
SFA Moves On to SLC Finals

SAN ANTONIO - Sunday's championship match is set, as No. 1 seed Stephen F. Austin snapped a two-game Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament losing streak to No. 5 seed Texas State tonight, winning 33-31, 30-27, 22-30 and 30-20. The win sets up a 2 p.m., championship game against Texas-Arlington on Sunday.
Stephen F. Austin improves to 29-3 and advances to the championship game for the first time since the 2004 season. Texas State ends its season at 15-17.
"It's a huge monkey off our back," Stephen F. Austin Head Coach Debbie Humphreys, the 2006 Southland Conference Coach of the Year said. "This win makes it much sweeter, because of the past two years. Lauren Adams did a great job filling in for J.J. Jones, who has a stomach bug. We are where we want to be. We'll lay it all out tomorrow."
In game one, Texas State jumped to a 13-8 lead, pushing it out to 17-11. Stephen F. Austin closed to within four, 19-15, before Texas State again pushed its lead out to 22-15. But the Ladyjacks used 7-0 run to make the score 24-22 and tied the match at 27-27, before pulling out a 33-31 victory.
In the second game, Stephen F. Austin led early 14-11, before Texas State used a 5-0 run to take a 16-14 lead. From there, the Ladyjacks were able to retake the lead at 20-18 and allowed Texas State to get within one on two more occasions, before the Ladyjacks took a 2-0 lead with a 30-27 victory.
In game three, Texas State jumped to a 12-6 lead. From there, the Bobcats pushed their lead out to eight and the Ladyjacks were only able to get back to seven points for the remainder of the match, as Texas State won 30-22.
In the deciding match, the Ladyjacks opened with an 11-6 advantage, pushing it out to eight, 20-12 and then out to 11, 24-13. The Bobcats got within eight on two occasions, but were unable to get closer, as the Ladyjacks claimed the match, 30-20.
Stephanie Figgers had a match high 29 digs for Stephen F. Austin. Kelly Fletcher 16 kills for TXST, while Traci Rohde had a team-best 16 kills for Stephen F. Austin.
