NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin baseball and softball programs kicked off their 2006 campaigns Friday night with a "Meet the 'Jacks" program sponsored by the Wednesday Nacogdoches Rotary Club. The event drew approximately 500 guests and marked the beginning of the baseball/softball alumni weekend that continued Saturday with a golf tournament and will conclude Sunday with baseball and softball games.
Friday's event featured guest speaker J.J. Gottsch, who is president of the Houston Astros' AA affiliate, the Corpus Christi Hooks. Gottsch delivered a brief address on the virtues of baseball as a source of pride for the community and as a way to bring families and friends together. He also encouraged attendees to support SFA's endeavor to construct a new state-of-the-art baseball/softball complex, citing the ways Corpus Christi has benefited from the building of the Hooks' home, Whataburger Field.
Following Gottsch's address, the softball and baseball teams were introduced to the audience and the winners of a silent auction for numerous items were announced. Door prizes were raffled off and given away throughout the evening.
Saturday's events began with a golf tournament at Piney Woods Country Club. Receptions for alumni of both the baseball and softball programs were scheduled to be held Saturday night at Banita Creek Hall, starting at 7 p.m. The festivities will wrap up Sunday afternoon with alumni games for both the baseball and softball program. An "old-timers" baseball game is scheduled for 11 a.m., and the alumni games are set to begin at 1 p.m.
