NACOGDOCHES, Texas - School officials announced Thursday the cancellation of several Stephen F. Austin athletics events originally scheduled for this weekend. Volleyball and soccer matches, as well as a cross country meet in North Carolina, have been called off due to concerns over traveling and competing during adverse weather created by Hurricane Rita, which is set to make landfall on the Gulf Coast early Saturday.
Saturday's football game against Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah is still on. The team is scheduled to depart for Utah early Friday morning, before the storm hits land.
The Ladyjack volleyball team's Thursday match at Texas-Arlington has been postponed. The Southland Conference match has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. The team was also scheduled to play three matches in a tournament at Texas Christian in Fort Worth, Texas. Those contests have been canceled and will not be made up. Thursday afternoon, head coach Debbie Humphreys said that every effort would be made to play Tuesday's home match against Northwestern State as scheduled. The contest is set to start at 7 p.m. in the William R. Johnson Coliseum but may be moved to Shelton Gymnasium.
The Ladyjack soccer team had been in the process of adding a Friday home match against TCU to the schedule. That game has been scrapped, as has SFA's trip to Natchitoches, La. to play Northwestern State on Sunday. Since the match was scheduled as a non-conference contest, it will not be made up.
The Lumberjack cross country team was scheduled to run Saturday at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Raleigh, NC. That trip has been canceled due to concerns about travel.
