NACOGDOCHES - The Ladyjacks opened up their 2005 season at the Houston Tournament this past weekend with a pair of matches against Houston and Wichita State. SFA fell to Houston in the first match by a score of 3-1 (23-30, 30-24, 37-39, 29-31). However, they battled back against a tough Wichita State team and won in five, 3-2 (28-30, 30-27, 16-30, 30-28, 15-11).
On Friday, September 2, the Ladyjacks will travel to Iowa State to participate in the Cyclone Classic. In day one of the tournament, they will face Drake at 10 a.m. and South Dakota State at 5 p.m. before taking on Montana at 10 a.m. and Iowa State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
SFA vs. Drake: These two teams have met on the court just once before. Back in 1994, the Ladyjacks took the lone match by a score of 3-2.
The Ladyjacks will meet South Dakota, Montana and Iowa State for the first time in school history.
About Drake: The Drake Bulldogs started out the season at the Iowa Tournament where they fell to Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 3-0, and Iowa, 3-0.
About South Dakota State: The Jackrabbit volleyball team has a 1-3 record going into this week. Kristie Klusaw is leading the way for the Jackrabbits with 139 assists in 14 games played. Samantha Pearson is in the lead with 56 digs and Minette Ridenour has 53 kills in the four matches.
About Montana: The Montana Grizzlies are 3-0 so far this season. Last weekend they won the Black Bears' Tournament in Orono, Maine. Diana Thompson is leading the team in assists 149 while Claudia Houle is the team leader in kills and digs with 62 and 60, respectively.
About Iowa State: Iowa State posted a 2-0 record to open up their season as they won the Blue Jay Invitational at Creighton. The Cyclones, Nicole Lorenzen, Katie Churm and Katie Jessen, that earned all-tournament team honors.
For the Ladyjacks: All-SLC preseason pick junior Laura Cramer had 22 kills against WSU and totaled 40 for the weekend. She also had 21 digs and four total blocks. Freshman Lauren Railey had a great debut weekend for the Ladyjacks playing in all 9 games and finishing with 26 kills, six blocks and 28 digs. Sophomore Traci Rohde closed out the weekend with 30 kills and eight total blocks. Junior libero Stephanie Figgers, another All-SLC preseason pick, had 42 digs in the two games. Sophomore JJ Jones, the Ladyjacks third All-SLC preseason pick, had 119 assists with 64 of those coming in the match against Houston.
