Preseason Poll Tabs Ladyjacks for League Crown

PLANO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team was picked to win the Southland Conference in a preseason poll of the league head coaches announced league officials Monday afternoon. The conference sports information directors selected Texas State to defend its conference title in 2004. The voting was extremely close in both polls as SFA received five first-place votes and 94 points to edge out Texas State who received six first-place votes but only 93 points. The league's SID poll was reversed with the Bobcats getting five first-place votes and 110 points to beat the Ladyjacks who also received five first-place votes but only 108 points. The Ladyjacks return eight letterwinners and every starter, including 2003 first-team All-Southland Conference selection Brittany Burton, from a team that went 19-13 overall and finished second in the conference a year ago. SFA opens the 2004 season Wednesday Sept. 1, in Ruston, La., against Louisiana Tech. The match against the Lady Techsters is set to begin at 7 p.m. -SFA-
