
Ladyjacks Split Annual Purple/White Match

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team opened the 2004 season Thursday with its annual Purple/White scrimmage. The match ended in a tie with as both teams won one game. Junior Lauren Stevens led the White team with nine kills on 22 attempts (.273 attack percentage). Preseason first-team All-Southland Conference selection Brittany Burton added seven kills and two blocks, as the white team came from behind in game two to pull out the 15-13 victory. Junior Amelia Mayeaux led the purple team with eight kills, seven digs and two blocks. Senior Deborah Kirkham and sophomore Lauren Adams added four kills as the purple team recorded a two-point victory, 31-29, in game one. Defensively, freshman Jami Hill and sophomore Stephanie Figgers were solid for the white team as Hill recorded a match-high 14 digs and Figgers added 12. Freshman setter JJ Jones led all players with her 21 assists. Both teams looked solid against the attack, as the Ladyjacks racked up 17 blocks on the night. Ten different Ladyjacks recorded at least one block, led by freshman Traci Rohde's three. The Ladyjacks kick-off the 2004 regular season Wednesday Sept. 1, when they travel to Ruston, La., to take on Louisiana Tech. The match against the Lady Techsters is slated to get underway at 7 p.m. -SFA-
