NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team recorded its second shutout of the season Sunday with its 5-0 victory over Sam Houston State. The Ladyjacks are now 7-2-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Southland Conference play.
SFA took the lead with an unassisted goal from freshman Alicia Reese at the 6:55 mark and then the defenses took over the game. The game went scoreless over the next 43 minutes as neither team could get open for a score. The Ladyjacks went into halftime with the 1-0 advantage.
In the second half the Ladyjacks turned it up a notch offensively. Sophomore Kendra Cannon netted team-high seventh goal of the season to give SFA a two-goal advantage. SFA was right back on the attack two minutes later as Lauren Cummings netted her first goal of the season.
Junior Christie Mestayer and freshman Shahin Pabani also scored goals to finish out the scoring for SFA.
"We got out to a slow start but that didn't surprise me," said SFA head coach Nicole Nelson. "This was our third game in five days and that is a heavy turnaround. I'm proud of the way the girls put it together in the second half. We executed our game plan the way we wanted and our defense did a great job shutting down the Bearkats."
SFA returns to action Friday when they travel to Thibodaux, La., to take on Nicholls State. The game is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
