NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team improved to 6-2-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the Southland Conference with their 3-1 victory over Texas State Friday night. The Ladyjacks are now undefeated in their last seven games.
In what has become a common event at Ladyjack soccer games, the first half was a defensive struggle as neither team found the back of the net. Sophomore goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki faced five shots on goal in the first half and stopped everyone. She finished the night with eight saves.
The Ladyjacks kicked it up a notch offensively in the second half. Junior Sophia Pantazis broke the scoreless tie with a goal at the 56:49 mark. The Ladyjacks were back on the attack less than three minutes later when junior Christie Mestayer netted her second goal of the season. SFA wasn't finished as Pantazis scored another goal in the 71st minute to put the game on ice.
Texas State scored their lone goal in the 74th minute by Natalie Holder.
"I'm proud with the victory tonight," said SFA head coach Nicole Nelson. "Texas State was picked to win the league and they always come ready to play. I was proud of our team because they fought all night. They believe that they can score at any time. We still have some things to work on but tonight was a great win for this program."
The Ladyjacks return to action Sunday to face first-year program Sam Houston State. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
