NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team signed Lauren Stevens to a National Letter of Intent announced SFA volleyball head coach Debbie Humphreys Thursday.
The 5-10 Stevens was a unanimous first-team all-district selection as an outside hitter during her senior year. While at Samuel Clemens High School, Stevens was named Offensive MVP and captained both her prep squad and Alamo Club team. She was also named as a "Player to Watch" in the Greater San Antonio Area. Stevens was a two-sport star at Samuel Clemens High, qualifying for the regional championships in the 400 meters, 4X100-meter relay, 4X400-meter relay and the long jump.
Stevens is not only a success on the volleyball court but in the classroom as well. She is a three-time Samuel Clemens Academic Excellence Award recipient and was a member of the National Honor Society. She earned academic all-district honors for both volleyball and track and is listed in the Who's Who Among High School Students.
"Lauren is a very solid athlete and a tremendous student," said Humphreys. "Even though she may be lacking in volleyball experience right now, the potential is there for her to make tremendous strides when she gets in an environment where volleyball is her primary sport. Lauren is a fluid athlete who will catch on very quickly. She will be one of those players who will show great improvement daily. The foundation and work ethic is there, now it is the job of our coaching staff to mold her into a Division I volleyball player. I'm really looking forward to working with this young lady."
The Ladyjacks kick off the 2002 season on Friday August 30, against Wichita State, in Wichita, Kansas. The start time for the match has not yet been determined.
