Nacogdoches - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team defeated Texas-San Antonio Saturday afternoon, 3-1 (30-17, 30-22, 28-30, 30-22), for it's second consecutive conference victory. The Ladyjacks are now 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the Southland Conference, while the Roadrunners fall to 1-6 on the season and 0-1 in the league.
SFA charged out to a commanding 2-0 lead behind the dominant performance of senior Kristy Rhodes (Cypress, Texas) and junior Angie Wood (Houston, Texas). Rhodes carded 15 kills on .433 hitting as well as digging 11 balls while Wood recorded a team-high 18 kills.
UTSA foght back to win game three and cut into the SFA lead behind strong play from Charlsie Heifrin (18 kills and a .317 attack percentage) and Stacy Schmidt (17 kills). But the Ladyjack defense was too strong as they recorded 20 blocks, to slow down the UTSA offense and win game four and the match.
"I'm happy to get the win and be 2-0 in the conference," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "But the reality of it is you always want it to be a pretty win but if you can find a way to win when you're not playing well, there are some positives we can take from that. We did some things well today but it seemed like the intensity level wasn't the same from last night."
The Ladyjacks return to action Tuesday against Louisiana-Monroe. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., from Monroe, La.
