Nacogdoches - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team defeated Southwest Texas Friday night, 3-0 (30-28, 30-19, 30-14), at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks improved to 7-3 on the season and 1-0 in the Southland Conference.
Despite a sluggish start in game one, the Ladyjacks slowly warmed up as the match progressed. In game 2, the SFA defense set the tone as the Ladyjacks recorded 12 of their 22 total blocks, led by redshirt freshman Brittany Burton (Livingston, Texas). Burton recorded eight total blocks, as the Ladyjacks grabbed a 30-19 victory in game two. The SFA defensive effort didn't let up in the third and final game as the Ladyjacks recorded four more blocks.
Offensively, the Ladyjacks were led by senior Kristy Rhodes (Cypress, Texas) and junior Angie Wood (Houston, Texas). Both recorded 11 kills, while Rhodes added nine digs and five assists. Senior Marissa Dorcheus (Houston, Texas) led all players with 33 assists.
Freshman Joanna Benestante (Houston, Texas) had her best night in a Ladyjack uniform as she notched five services. She was one of six Ladyjacks to record an ace against Bobcats. SFA's 12 aces set a new school record for aces in a match.
"You could see a serious difference tonight in our team compared to Monday night," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "This is the kind of effort we expect every night from our players. We didn't have a great start in game one but hung around and figured out a way to win. Tonight we played what we like to call 'Ladyjack volleyball.' I'm really proud of our team tonight."
The Ladyjacks put their undefeated Southland Conference record on the line Saturday as they take on Texas-San Antonio. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Admission is free to students.
