Houston, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team closed out the 2001 Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational Saturday afternoon by splitting its two matches. SFA beat Samford, 3-0, in the morning session but fell to No. 18 (USA Today/AVCA Top 25 Poll) Texas A&M, 3-0, in the afternoon. The Ladyjacks are now 2-2 on the season.
SFA was once again led by senior middle blocker Kristy Rhodes (Cypress, Texas). Rhodes tallied 13 kills and a .522 attack percentage against the Bulldogs. She also recorded five block assists. The Ladyjacks were solid against the Bulldogs defensively as freshman middle blocker Brittany Burton (Livingston, Texas) and junior middle blocker Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) each recorded 4 blocks. Junior setter Sunni Williams (Houston, Texas) led the Ladyjacks for the third consecutive match in digs as she recorded 12.
The Ladyjacks were again led by Rhodes against Texas A&M, as she struck for 12 kills. Texas A&M was too strong offensively, having seven players who recorded at least five kills.
"We came out and executed better offensively against Samford," said head coach Debbie Humphreys. "We played a solid match in all phases of the game. Against Texas A&M, we did some good things. We were right there in game two and had our chances to win. We executed pretty well against the Aggies but we just were not quite as consistent in our play as we were against Samford."
The Ladyjacks return to action Tuesday, Sept. 4, to take on Southern Methodist. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. It will be the season home-opener for the Ladyjacks.
