Chappelle’s 88th-minute game-winner lifted SFA to comeback victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin Women's Soccer defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2-1 on Thursday. Alyce Chappelle called game on her late-game goal in the last five minutes of the Southland opener to move the Ladyjacks to 1-0 in conference.
Brandie Musser was able to keep SFA within reach in the first half, making three saves during a late A&M-Corpus Christi stretch after the Islanders had gone ahead 1-0. A&M-Corpus Christi scored in the seventh minute on Vanessa Wimbish's goal, assisted by MyJoi Anderson and Sophia Dias, while SFA generated first-half chances from BB Bonzheim, Savanna Oberholtzer and Sawyer Kohutek. SFA went into halftime trailing 1-0 to the Islanders.
The Ladyjacks created offensive pressure early in the second half, with SFA recording the first shot, an attempt from Oberholtzer a minute and a half in. Kensley Smith opened the scorebook for the Jacks first, with a goal in the 57th minute. Smith went where Grandma keeps the cookies—the top shelf—to level the score at 1-1 with an assist from Delgado and Williams. Chappelle scored the go-ahead goal late into the second half off assists from Kohutek and goalkeeper Musser at 87:43 to put SFA ahead 2-1.Â
Musser finished with nine saves over 90 minutes and added an assist on the Jacks game-winner. Chappelle scored the game-winning goal and led SFA with four shots, putting one on goal. Smith tallied a goal on her only shot attempt.
