Kohutek nets first career goal as Jacks late rally fell short against Cowgirls

LAKE CHARLES, La. — Stephen F. Austin soccer lost at McNeese 3-2 on Thursday. SFA pushed late, with 10 attacking actions from 76:55 to 89:08, moving from a 3-1 deficit to 3-2 before the rally fell short.

SFA answered an early McNeese goal at 21:57, when Lucie Platt converted a penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1 in the first half. Brandie Musser made three saves during a McNeese push earlier in the half, while Kensley Smith and Alyce Chappelle led the Jacks' offensive front, each putting shots on frame for SFA. McNeese went back in front on Gabbi Barusic's goal at 31:41, and the Ladyjacks went to the half trailing 2-1.

Sawyer Kohutek netted her first career goal for the Jacks, scoring off Andrea Delgado's assist in the 85th minute as SFA cut McNeese's lead to 3-2. The goal came during a late SFA push that included three corner kicks and a near shot that rang off the right woodwork by Carlie Thurmond. Sydney Robinett made six second-half saves, but McNeese's early goal in the half stood up in the 3-2 final.

Platt scored on one of her two shots and converted her only penalty attempt. Kohutek scored on her lone shot on goal. Delgado recorded SFA's assist and added one shot. Robinett made six saves in the last 45 minutes.

SFA moves to 4-7-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play. McNeese improves to 6-5-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.

Up next, the SFA soccer team hosts Northwestern State on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. at SFA Soccer Field in Nacogdoches, Texas. This match capps off Parents Weekend at SFA as the Ladyjacks host the Lady Demons in the 38th all-time matchup. The preseason conference favorites make their 20th trip to Nacogdoches in the series.
