Defending Southland Champs close out spring activities on Sunday inside Homer Bryce Stadium; Gates open at 1 p.m. with a 2 p.m. start

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – New coaches on both sides of the football and a reloaded roster take center stage on Sunday afternoon inside Homer Bryce Stadium, while a thick familiarity will still blanket the East Texas air as Stephen F. Austin closes out semester activities with the 2026 Graylan Spring Game. The action starts at 2 p.m. with gates opening an hour prior.

Admission is free and as is parking which will be available in the Hall 20 parking lot, the SFA commuter lot, and along Hayter Street.

The annual contest is named in memory of former SFA football player Graylan Spring who passed away on January 21, 2023, from injuries suffered in a car accident the day prior.

The 2026 season will be the eighth for head coach Colby Carthel and the 100th for the SFA football program. The Lumberjacks are coming off a historic 2025 campaign that saw SFA capture the program's fifth SLC title and first since 2010, while making the program's ninth FCS postseason appearance. That title came behind the program's first eight-win conference season and first perfect finish in league play in 99 seasons. The 'Jacks reached double-digit wins for the fifth time in program history and the 11 victories last fall are the most since the '95 campaign.

Jeff Richards (CB Coach)

Justin Posthuma (QB Coach)

Gary Salgado (DL Coach)
Brings more than 20 years of collegiate coaching experience to SFA… Most recently served as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Angelo State… Won 2020-21 NJCAA National Championship while at Hutchinson CC… played collegiately at Fullerton College and West Virginia Tech…

Jared May (Offensive Coordinator)
Promoted to offensive coordinator this winter after serving as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator since 2019… member of 2024 Dave Campbell's Texas Football 40 Under 40 class… Oversaw SFA's record-breaking punt return unit 2025 and aiding an offense that led the SLC in third-down conversion, first downs offense and redzone offense, while ranking second in scoring offense…

Caid Faske (Defensive Coordinator)
Coached the Lumberjack defensive ends from 2019 to 2022 and returned to take over as defensive coordinator in early January after serving as defensive coordinator at CSU-Pueblo… Guided ThunderWolves defense as one of the RMAC's top turnover-forcing units and sack-producing operations… Seven championships in 14 years as collegiate coach including 2017 DII National Championship with Texas A&M-Commerce and the 2022 WAC title with SFA…

Cameron Rogers (Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Coach)
Entering his eighth season on staff at SFA and tenth as a collegiate coach… Promoted to co-defensive coordinator this spring… Played under head coach Colby Carthel at Texas A&M-Commerce where he was a four-time All-Lone Star Conference selection and a member of the 2017 DII National Championship staff… Led the Lumberjack linebackers last fall and was instrumental in the development and successes of All-American Jaydon Southard…

Shaun Whittinghill (Outside Linebackers Coach)
Promoted to a full-time role this offseason in charge of outside linebackers… Helped SFA rank as one of the top FCS defensive units in 2025… Played collegiately as a defensive end at Austin Peay State University from 2015–2019… An All-OVC selection, helped lead the Governors to the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Championship and an FCS playoff quarterfinal appearance…

GAME FORMAT
The Graylan Spring Game will be divided up into nine segments featuring offense vs. defense with a unique scoring style allowing for back-and-forth action. The SFA offense will don the white uniforms with the SFA defense wearing purple.
