SFA jumps out to early lead, breaks tie in seventh, but surrenders two in ninth of fifth one-run loss
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin grabbed a 5-0 lead through three innings of play and took a 6-5 lead in the seventh after a Tarleton State offensive over the fourth and fifth innings, but the Jacks were unable to hold onto the advantage as the Texans plated two in the ninth to take game two 7-6 and the series. SFA falls to 13-11, while TSU moves to 15-7.
Reid Bowyer delivered a five-pitch frame in the eighth inning to get the Jacks back to the plate quickly after the host took the lead in the post-stretch seventh. Julian Swift grounded out to the shortstop to score Rodric Black for the 6-5 SFA lead.
A two-out double by Ethan Adkisson and an ensuing walk to Black, who enjoyed a three-hit night, were both left stranded in the home-half of the eighth. A throwing error in the ninth extended the frame as the Texans plated two runs, with the tying run crossing on a wild pitch and the go-ahead tally on a two-out single into left.
SFA's early offense came courtesy of an RBI single by Juan Cantua to open Saturday scoring in the second and a four-run inning in the fourth via two-run singles off the bats of Swift and Ethan Peña.
Elian Balmaceda worked three innings in relief of Gabriel LeBlanc who exited in the second. Bowyer suffered the loss despite no hits over three innings. Nate Vidlak and Kadin Munson combined on the ninth.
