SFA plates six in frame highlighted by Swift Grand Slam; strands two in ninth of 9-8 loss
Swift's blast highlighted a six-run frame for the Jacks who entered the post-stretch seventh trailing 7-1. Ethan Peña, who homered in the eighth to pull the Jacks to within a run of the TSU advantage, led off the inning with a HBP, Juan Cantua doubled before Josh Ibe, with one out in the frame, singled to score Peña and put runners at the corners.
Canuta scored as Trey Acreman flew out for a sac fly, while a HBP to Cooper Schneider and a four-pitch walk to Jhett Creel set the table for Swift.
SFA opened scoring in the home half of the first as Swift singled home Creel. Tarleton State responded with three in the second, one in the fourth and three more in the sixth. A two-run double in the eighth gave the Texans the lead for good.
Cody Templeton went 4.2 innings facing 23 TSU batters. Charlie Feris took over with two outs in the fifth and worked around a pair of runners to post a zero in the frame. A fielding error extended the inning for the Texans in the three-run sixth as Feris' day ended for Gage Elliott. Elliot worked 1.1 facing one over the minimum with three punchouts and an earned run. Jack James tossed the eighth and ninth innings allowing one earned run.
Mark Henning and Peña both singled in the ninth and moved up a bag on a wild pitch with two outs, before TSU closed the door to take game one.
