Lumberjacks Win Bulldog Classic Opener

A nine-strikeout, complete game shutout from Crimson Bryant powered SFA to a 5-0 win over Northern Iowa.
RUSTON, La.- The Stephen F. Austin softball team traveled to Ruston for the Bulldog Classic hosted by Louisiana Tech.
The Jacks opened up their tournament slate against the Northern Iowa Panthers Thursday night. SFA got on the board in the first inning after a defensive miscue from UNI scored Jamie Varga from third, 1-0. With runners on second and third, Adelyn Becerra sent a fly ball to right field for a sacrifice fly, 2-0. Malia Jones stepped up to the plate with a runner on third and two outs. Jones continued her hot streak this week with a two-run blast to give the Jacks a 4-0 lead. SFA added to their lead in the bottom of the second after a throwing error by UNI allowed Ellie Vance to advance to third and score Varga from first, 5-0. Both sides pitched lights out the rest of the night as neither team scored another run the rest of the game.
POSTGAME NOTES
• SFA has now won eight of their last nine games.
• Malia Jones led the team with two RBIs and a home run.
• Five different Jacks recorded hits.
• Crimson Bryant dominated the Panthers with 7.0 innings of shutout pitching allowing only one run and striking out nine batters.
