Bland’s two-run 2B in fifth inning of game two gives SFA first win of weekend
PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Stephen F. Austin split Saturday's doubleheader with Arkansas-Pine Bluff bouncing back from a 4-3 defeat in the first game of the day to pick up a 2-1 victory in game two. The Jacks aim for the series split on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
In the win, Cermodrick Bland accounted for half of SFA's four hits including a two-run double in the fifth inning that gave the Jacks a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish. With two outs, Bland placed a pitch down the left field line to give SFA starter Dylan Mulcahy the lead.
The home half of the fifth was Mulcahy's last frame in a start that saw him work around three walks and allow just two hits with six strikeouts. The arms behind him held up the advantage as Elian Balmaceda faced just two over the minimum in two innings of work, while Hayden Tronson (0.2 IP) and Gage Elliott (1.1 IP) combined on the final two frames of hit-less baseball. The staff tossed around a pair of base runners in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to preserve the lead for a sixth SFA win.
In Saturday's opener, Jhett Creel enjoyed a 3-for-3 day with two doubles. Mark Henning tied the game at a run in the third inning with a run-scoring double, while a bases loaded walk to Ethan Adkisson in the fifth knotted the contest at 2. Two frames later, Adkisson singled into right field to score Creel and give the Jacks a 3-2 advantage, but the Lions took advantage of an error in the eighth to score two for a 4-3 lead and eventual win.
Gabriel LeBlanc went 5.0 innings scattering four hits and a free pass to fan five. Four more arms saw action in the opener as the 'pen allowed just two hits but walked a combined five batters with an additional HBP over the final three innings.
