Jacks Endure Islanders’ Second-Half Run for 12th Straight Win

SFA withstands A&M-CC’s 63% shooting effort in second half to move to 17-1 in SLC play
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – It's never smooth sailing in the Southland Conference, and that was especially the case on Monday night in Corpus Christi, as Stephen F. Austin managed to ride a strong second half wave from A&M-CC to cast away the Islanders 78-68 and earn a 12th consecutive victory. SFA improves to 24-3 on the season, while its SLC record grows to 17-1. The Jacks hold a two-game lead atop the league standings with four to play.
SFA carried a 21-point lead into the intermission but was outscored 52-41 in the final twenty minutes as the visitors held off an A&M-CC squad that managed to pull within six points of the SFA lead twice and within five points in the final two minutes of action.
The Jacks used a 21-point effort from Lateef Patrick and 18 points from Keon Thompson, which included seven second-half free throws, five of which were netted in the final 2:15 of play. Patrick added seven inside points in the second half with Kam Burton hitting two threes in the first half. Gediminas Alisas scored eight of his nine points in the second half to help fend off the host.
An 8-0 Islander run over 2:34 of play also saw SFA go 1-of-7 from the floor in that span as the host cut the Jacks' lead to just six at 59-53. Patrick converted two free throws then followed with a jump step inside and got the roll to go on the jump shot to help the Jacks push the lead back to ten points at 63-53 as the clock tucked under seven minutes to play.
Moments later, Thompson spun inside for a bucket and a 13-point lead, the Jacks' largest of the final ten minutes, as an A&M-CC scoring drought grew to three minutes.
Leading by five with 90 seconds to play, all five Jacks touched the basketball through an impressive effort to get to the open man who was Ahamed Mohammed. His first attempt didn't go, but an offensive board and put back pushed the Jacks back out front by seven. On the other end of the floor, the league's top shot blocker in Colonel stuffed a baseline offering from the Islanders which resulted in an SFA possession and successful free throws from Thompson.
The Jacks employed an extremely stingy defensive effort in the first half forcing the Islanders into a 22% shooting clip, an overall clip that was at 8% at the final media stoppage as A&M-CC managed just nine points through the game's first 16:49 of play. The Islanders made just one of 13 three-point field goal attempts in the opening twenty and managed just one trip to the free throw line.
Patrick hammered four first-half triple tries which included him nailing his first with a declining shot clock on SFA's first possession of the night. Patrick went for 14 points in 16 first-half minutes.
