NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (17-31, 8-21 SLC) continued their hot stretch of play with a 6-2 win over the Incarnate Word Cardinals (17-32, 3-26 SLC) this afternoon.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first, but the 'Jacks opened the scoring in the second inning, as Kevin Duran smoked his third home run of the year, a solo shot over the left field wall to put SFA up, 1-0. The score held the same through the fifth inning, as Lumberjacks starter Cody Templeton continued his strong season with five scoreless innings to start the game. In the sixth inning, however, UIW would tie the game at 1.
The 'Jacks quickly responded, putting up two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. After Cermodrick Bland and Cooper Schneider singled to lead off the inning, the two would put SFA in a great position to score as they stole second and third. One batter later, Julian Swift came through with an RBI single into left field to score Bland and put the 'Jacks back up. Mark Henning followed Swift with a fielder's choice to second base, scoring Schneider, giving SFA a 3-1 lead after six innings.
UIW scored another run with a solo shot to lead off the seventh, but the Lumberjacks continued to score in the bottom of the inning. Dalton Mullins led off the inning with a solo home run to right, and after Cermodrick Bland walked with one out, Cooper Schneider crushed a two-run home run to left field to give SFA a 6-2 lead.
Meanwhile, Cody Templeton continued to dominate the UIW bats as he worked a scoreless eighth inning. The 'Jacks were held off the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning, and Cody Templeton strolled to the mound in search of his third complete game of the year. Templeton would do just that, striking out the side to finish his stellar outing and cap off a 'Jacks win over the Cardinals, 6-2.
