NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Baseball Team (15-31, 6-21 SLC) return home for their final series of the season as they play host to the visiting Incarnate Word Cardinals (17-30, 3-24 SLC) for a weekend series at Pilgrim's Park.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks are fresh off an impressive series in Lake Charles last weekend that saw the Lumberjacks take two of three from the third-place McNeese State Cowboys to secure their first conference series win of the season. The Lumberjack offense found their spark late in the series opener with a four-run seventh inning to squeak out a 5-4 win over the Cowboys, before they exploded in the rubber match of the series with eight runs in the first four innings in an eventual 10-3 win over the Cowboys. The Lumberjacks, winners of three of their last four, will now look to carry over the momentum from their series win over the Cowboys coupled with their dominating 20-8 midweek win over Grambling State back home as they look to end their season on a high note at Pilgrim's Park.
Cardinals at a Glance:
The Incarnate Word Cardinals hit the road to close out their 2025 regular season coming off a four-game homestand that saw the Cardinals offense get into a pair of slug fests with the UTRGV Vaqueros as the two schools combined to score 47 runs over the first two games of their three-game weekend series. The Cardinals will look to snap a three-game winning streak at Pilgrim's Park and improve on their 8-13 away record and 3-24 conference record as their most recent game against UTSA on Tuesday was canceled due to weather, allowing the Cardinals a full week of rest for their series against SFA.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Josh Ibe continues to mash at the plate for SFA, recording a hit in all three games against the Cowboys, while launching his 13th home run of the season in the 10-3 series finale win against McNeese. Julian Swift continues to swing a scorching hot bat as he carries a 10-game hit streak back home to Nacogodches, recording four multi-hit efforts during the streak, while scoring eight runs over his last 10 games. Cermodrick Bland rounded out the SFA offense this weekend as the talented freshman recorded hits in all three games against McNeese, scored three runs, and showed off the wheels as he swiped three bases over the weekend and is up to 20 stolen bases on the year.
Cody Templeton continues to be a workhorse on the mound for the Lumberjacks, as he tossed 6.2 innings in the series opener against the Cowboys to move up to 78.2 innings pitched this season, which ranks him second in the conference. Jack James was stellar in the rubber match against the Cowboys as he tossed four scoreless innings out of the 'pen for the 'Jacks to lock down the 10-3 series finale win.
Scouting Report-Cardinals:
Rob Liddington Jr. and Rey Mendoza have formed a dynamic hitting duo for UIW this season. Liddington Jr. leads the team with a .364 batting average and has tallied 10 doubles, five triples, 13 home runs, while driving in 47 RBIs this season. Mendoza has been just as dangerous as he has knocked a team-high 18 doubles, is tied with Liddington Jr. with 13 home runs, and has driven in a team-high 53 on the year. Josh Salinas and EJ Garcia have been familiar faces on the bump for the Cardinals as both have pitched over 60 innings on the year.
Series:
Thursday evening's series opener between these two Southland opponents will mark the 19th all-time meeting, with SFA leading the series 10-8 to present day. These two schools last met in 2021 which saw the Lumberjacks claim a 11-1 home win over the Cardinals. SFA holds a 5-5 home record all-time against the Cardinals.
