NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (11-29, 3-19 SLC) lost the first game of their three-game series against the Northwestern State Demons (26-17, 16-9 SLC) this evening, 12-2.
Neither team could put up any runs in the first, but NSU started the scoring in the top of the second, scoring one run. The Lumberjacks didn't take long to respond. In the bottom of the second, Mark Henning led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and advanced to second after Julian Swift singled. Kevin Duran then moved them both over one base with a sacrifice bunt. Dalton Mullins came through for his team one batter later, hitting a sacrifice fly to centerfield, tying the game at one.
The Demons put up another run in the second, taking a one-run lead. The 'Jacks once again responded with a run of their own, as Josh Ibe would miss a home run by a couple of feet, doubling to center to score Cermodrick Bland, who had walked earlier in the inning. After two, the game was tied at two.
The fourth inning went without a run, but Northwestern State hit two two-run home runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 6-2 lead. In the top of the next inning, the Demons scored another two runs, in part by their third home run of the game, extending their lead to 8-2 after six innings.
The two teams were scoreless in the seventh, but the Demons once again went to work in the eighth, scoring another four runs to go up by ten, 12-2. Unfortunately, the Lumberjacks were unable to bring another run across the plate, and the ten-run rule would go into effect. The Lumberjacks lost the series opener, 12-2.
Dylan Mulcahy (1-3) was tagged with the loss, while Carter White (3-1) earned the win.
