
Adelyn Becerra’s Two-Run Home Run Lifts ‘Jacks to Undefeated Weekend at Mardi Gras Mambo

YOUNGSVILLE, La.- The Stephen F. Austin softball (9-10) faced off against the Maine Black Bears (2-11) in their final game of the Mardi Gras Mambo.
After scoring 27 runs against Army and West Georgia, the SFA offense continued their hot streak in the bottom of the second inning that began with a leadoff single from Lilly Bean that was followed up by a double to right center from Ella Hill. Jamie Varga stepped up to the plate with runners on second and third and no outs and smoked a ball past the gloves of the third baseman and the shortstop to score Sammy Hagman and Hill, 2-0. Chloe Reneau followed with a single to the shortstop and then advanced to second on a throwing error from the Maine shortstop. With runners on second and third with nobody out, Adelyn Becerra hit an RBI single through the left side which allowed Varga to score, 3-0. Kaylee Paul then hit an RBI groundout to the shortstop which gave Reneau enough time to cross home plate, 4-0. The 'Jacks kept the train rolling as Mikaelah Burkland hit an RBI single through the left side to score Becerra, 5-0. Kelby Robbins stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second with one out and lined a ball into the right center gap which scored Vance and Burkland, 7-0.
Maine answered back with three runs in the top of the third, and three runs in the top of the fourth, 7-6. After a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth, Maine would bring across the tying run off a double to right center, 7-7. In the bottom of the fifth, the Black Bears got two quick outs before Reneau drew a walk which brought Becerra up to bat. Becerra smashed a ball to left center that went over the glove of the left fielder and landed beyond the outfield fence for a two-run home run which would be the game-winning RBIs for the 'Jacks who pulled out a 9-7 win.
