NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Softball team (13-14, 3-3 SLC) close out their four-game homestand on Wednesday evening as they faceoff with the Sam Houston State University Bearkats (13-15, 3-3 CUSA) for the second time this season, looking to sweep the season series against the 'Kats.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks saved their best softball for the final two games of the series against Lamar as following a 4-1 series opener loss to Lamar, the 'Jacks rallied for a doubleheader sweep against the Cardinals to claim their first conference series win of the season. SFA rallied from a 4-3 deficit in the bottom of the seventh against the Cardinals with a pair of runs to walk-off Lamar in the doubleheader opener and give SFA their third walk-off winner of 2025. The 'Jacks carried that energy from game one right into game two as they flew out of the gate in the first inning of game two with a five-run first to help power them to an 8-4 win and secure the series win over Lamar. For the fourth time in their last five games, the Lumberjack offense tallied eight hits as they continue to keep traffic on the basepaths and make things uncomfortable for opposing defenses and pitchers, as they look to keep swinging hot bats in their homestand finale.
Bearkats at a Glance:
The Sam Houston State University Bearkats picked up their third conference win of the season as they rallied late to stun the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders in the finale of their three-game conference series. The Blue Raiders had their foot on the gas through five innings against Sam Houston, holding a comfortable 8-1 lead going into the sixth, but the Bearkats had other plans for this one as they exploded for an eight-run top of the sixth to claim an improbable come-from-behind 9-8 victory over Middle Tennessee on the road. The Bearkats close out a four-game road trip on Wednesday night in Nacogdoches looking to improve on their 5-3 away record this season.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Ellie Vance and Lilly Bean have formed a dynamic duo at the dish for SFA over the last week as they both carry a four-game hitting streak into Wednesday night against Sam Houston, with Bean also providing the heroics in the 5-4 walk-off win against Lamar in game two. Mikaelah Burkland muscled out her first home run of the year in the series finale win over the Cardinals and has tallied four multi-hit efforts in her last five contests. Kyi'Marri Ester continues to drive in runners at an absurd pace as she added on three more RBIs this weekend against Lamar and now leads the 'Jacks with 18 driven in this season. Alexis Telford continues to hold down the ace spot in the circle for SFA as she pitched five innings against the Cardinals in the series finale allowing just two runs and punching out a pair of hitters, bringing her season era to 1.37.
Scouting Report-Bearkats:
Jenny Robison and Brodie Quinlan have been tough outs for opposing pitchers this year as both have over 20 hits, a batting average over .300, and have combined to draw 23 walks. Bela Perez and Elia Hebel have brought the pop for Sam Houston as they have combined to hit nine homers this season and have driven in a combined 31 runners. Abigail Young continues to keep opposing offenses at bay as she has pitched to the tune of a 1.25 era this season, allowing just eight earned runs in 44.2 innings pitched.
Series:
Wednesday's midweek tilt will continue this historic rivalry as it will see these two iconic Texas programs faceoff for the 153rd all-time meeting, with Sam Houston leading the series 81-71 to date. The Lumberjacks hold a 30-29 home record all-time against the Bearkats. SFA has won the previous two meetings over the Bearkats, including when these two teams met just over a month ago in Huntsville where SFA edged out the 'Kats 1-0 thanks to a nine-strikeout complete-game gem in the circle from Alexis Telford.
On Deck:
The Lumberjacks continue SLC play this weekend as they travel to San Antonio to square off with the Incarnate Word Cardinals. The series runs Friday, March 21st to Saturday, March 22nd with the series kicking off with a single game on Friday afternoon that has first pitch set for 3:00 p.m. CST, before a doubleheader Saturday that kicks off at 12:00 p.m. CST.
