NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (14-16, 7-12) lost to the Nicholls Colonels (19-11, 13-6) on Saturday night, 94-70.
Nicholls started this one hot, knocking down two three-pointers in the opening minutes. Juhlawnei Stone scored the first points of the game for the 'Jacks with a layup before the Colonels scored another five points to make it 11-2 Nicholls. Free throws by Chrishawn Christmas and a layup by Dominic Pangonis would cut the lead to eight.
Nicholls would immediately follow those points with five more of their own, but back-to-back threes by Keith Lamar would make the score 22-12 in favor of the Colonels. At the 10-minute mark of the first half, the Colonels held a 24-12 lead.
Neither team could score the next couple of minutes as both teams locked in a defensive battle. A layup by Nicholls would break the scoring drought and extend their lead to 14. Both teams would go back and forth, as Matt Hayman's first three-pointer of the night helped the 'Jacks stay in the ball game. With five minutes left to go in the first half, Nicholls held a 32-18 lead. Immediately following the five-minute mark, Myles Jenkins would hit his first three of the night. Keon Thompson would also hit a layup and two free throws to bring the score to 34-25 Colonels.
After a three by Nicholls, Myles Jenkins would cash his second three-ball of the night to keep the score within single digits. Nicholls would respond with a 10-2 scoring run to extend their lead to 16. DaeVeon Scott would hit a deep three at the end of the first half, making the score 46-33 Nicholls at halftime.
In the second, Matt Hayman would get involved, hitting his second three of the night to start the half. Rob Brown III would do the same for Nicholls, keeping the deficit at 13. Myles Jenkins would then respond with his third three of the night to cut the lead to 10. The Colonels, however, would respond with a quick 10-2 run to make the score 59-41.
Jenkins would continue his hot shooting night, hitting his season-high fourth three of the game to keep SFA within striking distance. Following two free throws from the Colonels, Keon Thompson would knock down his first three of the game to make the score 61-47 Nicholls.
After a 6-2 run by Nicholls, Myles Jenkins would score his 13th and 14th points of the night on a layup to cut the lead to 16. Unfortunately, the Colonels would score seven straight points to make it 74-51 Nicholls.
Threes by Hayman and Dominic Pangonis would make it 75-57 Nicholls with 10 minutes to play. The two teams would continue to trade buckets, and with five minutes left in the contest, Nicholls held a commanding 84-63 lead.
Despite their efforts, SFA could not trim the deficit, losing to Nicholls 94-70. With the loss, SFA was officially eliminated from Southland Conference Tournament contention.
