NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks men's basketball team (14-15, 7-11) returns home for their final two games of the regular season as they look to keep their tournament hopes alive on Saturday afternoon against the visiting Nicholls State University Colonels (18-11, 12-6).
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks return home for their final two regular-season games and will have their work cut out for them as they look to secure the eighth and final SLC tournament spot. The Lumberjacks will be in the right place to pull off an end-of-season sweep as they will be in the friendly confines of the Sawmill for the first time since February 10th. The Lumberjacks have won three straight home games. In the three home wins the Lumberjacks offense has put up over 75 points in all three wins. The Lumberjacks will offer a solid counterpunch to Nicholls and McNeese's high-powered offenses as the 'Jacks boast the second-best defense in the Southland, holding opponents to just 66.5 points per game, and will look to regain their offensive momentum from just a few weeks ago with their tournament hopes on the line.
Colonels at a Glance:
The Colonels will be looking to extend their three-game winning streak over their final two games of the season as they first travel to the William R. Johnson Coliseum to face-off with SFA, before ending their season in Beaumont against the Lamar University Cardinals. The Colonels won their final two home games of the season, ending their home slate with a 71-69 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, keeping the Colonels in contention for a bye in the Southland Tournament. Nicholls will finish the year with an 11-4 home record, while they aim to finish the year with a winning road record as they own a 7-7 road record this year.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Matt Hayman continues to establish himself as one of the premier scorers in the Southland as he ranks in the top-10 in the conference in points per game with his team-leading 14.1 points per game average. Hayman has become nearly automatic when it comes to scoring in double figures as he has now run his streak to 14 straight games with double-digit points. One of the drivers behind Hayman's success offensively is he has no problem knocking down three-pointers, leading the team with 59 three-point field goals and ranking seventh in the conference in that category. Keon Thompson formed a solid 1-2 scoring punch with Hayman lately as he has finished in double figures in eight of his last nine games, including a team-high 16 points their last time out against HCU. Chrishawn Christmas has been a workhorse for SFA, starting in all 29 games this season for the Lumberjacks, while Nana Antwi-Boasiako has been one of the most consistent rebounding presences in the Southland with his team-high 174 boards, which ranks him 10th in the SLC.
Scouting Report-Colonels
The Colonels offer a balanced offensive attack as four different Colonels average double-digit points per game. Robert Brown III spearheads the group with his 12.8 points/game, while Jamal West Jr. (11.9 points/game), Byron Ireland (11.8 points/game), and Michael Gray Jr. (11.8 points/game) round out the balanced Colonels offensive gameplan. West Jr. has turned into a dual-threat player for Nicholls as he leads the team in rebounds with 187, ranking him seventh in the conference.
Series:
Saturday evening's pivotal home matchup for SFA will see these two schools square off for the 49th time in the all-time series history. SFA leads the all-time record over Nicholls State 27-21, however, the Colonels won the most recent meeting between the two Southland opponents in January when they claimed a 73-61 home win over the Lumberjacks.
