Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The SFA Lumberjacks have developed a knack for second-half rallies in their past couple of games. Down 17 points vs. Lamar at halftime, the 'Jacks nearly erased the big lead and fell 67-62. The Lumberjacks took it a step further on Monday evening at New Orleans, coming back from a 72-61 deficit with 2:09 remaining in the second half by embarking on a 13-2 run over the final two minutes to help force overtime against the New Orleans Privateers. This time, however, the Lumberjacks would not be denied a come-from-behind victory as following a back-and-forth overtime period and the Privateers tying the game at 85-85 with 2.3 seconds left, Matt Hayman banked a buzzer beater three-pointer from beyond halfcourt for an 88-85 overtime conference win at New Orleans. The Lumberjacks improved to 10-13 overall and 3-9 in SLC play. The Lumberjacks look to use the energy and momentum from their unforgettable victory on Monday into their critical two-game homestand as they look to continue to gain ground in the Southland standings.
Islanders at a Glance:
The Corpus Christi Islanders will continue their four-game road trip in Nacogdoches on Saturday evening looking to build off a 78-66 win over the East Texas A&M Lions. The Islanders continue to be neck-and-neck for the second spot in the Southland standings as they are just a half-game back of Lamar for the #2 spot in the Southland standings. Powering the Islanders 15 wins this season has been an impressive offense that is ranked #1 in the Southland as they average 79.4 points per game, which will be put to the test against the Lumberjacks and their number #2 ranked defense in the Southland that holds opponents to just 65.8 points/ a game. The Islanders are 4-7 on the road to date.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Keon Thompson has put together an impressive three game offensive streak. The point guard in his last three games at New Orleans, vs. East Texas A&M, and Lamar, has totaled 58 points (19.3 ppg), 23-for-41 (.561) from the field, 15 rebounds, 19 assists and 7 steals.
Keon is fresh off a career-scoring performance that saw him drop a career-high 23 points against the Privateers this past Monday night. Keon leads the 'Jacks in scoring overall at 13.0 ppg and in conference averaging 12.8 ppg. Right behind Thompson, Matt Hayman is the second leading scorer overall and in SLC play, averaging 12.9 and 12.2 ppg respectively. Hayman has provided unmatched consistency over the last month. His 19-point performance at New Orleans, capped off with his improbable buzzer-beater, marked his eighth straight game with double-digit points while making five three-pointers for the second time in three games in the win. Chrishawn Christmas has been a workhorse for the Lumberjacks this year as he is one of only two Lumberjacks (Matt Hayman) to start all 23 games this season.
Scouting Report-Islanders
Garry Clark helps lead a dangerous Islanders offensive attack as he averages 14.8 points per game, while being just as dangerous in the rebounding department pulling down 188 boards on the year.
