NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks defeated the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lion today, 7-6, for their second win of the young season.
This one was a pitcher's duel early, as SFA starter Dylan Mulcahy was able to keep the Golden Lions bats quiet through two innings. UAPB starter Brendan Hamlin did the same for the Golden Lions. In the bottom of the third, the Lumberjacks were able to get on the board. Cermodrick Bland was able to double down the line, and River Curs would follow him with an infield single. Dalton Mullins then walked, loading the bases for Josh Ibe. Ibe would be hit by a pitch, scoring the first run of the game. Mark Henning would then walk, scoring Curs to make it 2-0 Lumberjacks. Kevin Duran would follow in Ibe's footsteps and get hit by a pitch, scoring Mullins. Finally, Ethan Adkisson would hit a sac fly to score Ibe, making it 4-0 Lumberjacks after three innings.
Lumberjacks starter Dylan Mulcahy would proceed to dominate, striking out the side in the fourth and retiring the side in order in the fifth. His final line was five innings pitched, one hit, no earned runs, and eight strikeouts.
In the sixth, Josh Ibe would extend SFA's lead with a no-doubt home run to left field, making it 5-0 Lumberjacks. Duran and Adkisson would follow him with singles, and Julian Swift would smoke a double to center field, scoring Duran and making it 6-0 in favor of the 'Jacks.
UAPB would chip away in the sixth, scoring one to make it 6-1 Lumberjacks. The Lumberjacks bets were unable to tack on any more runs in the next couple of innings.
The score remained the same until the top of the eighth when the Golden Lions were able to score another run to make it 6-2 SFA.
In the top of the ninth, the Golden Lions would fight all the way back, scoring four runs, thanks in part to a two-out, two-strike three-run home run by Ben VanMaanen.
The Lumberjacks would not be denied, though, as Adkisson would single to right to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Julian Swift. Cermodrick Bland then stepped up and would line a pitch to center field, scoring Hoshizaki, who pinch-run for Adkisson. The Lumberjacks would win, 7-6.
Jonathan Valdez (1-0) would be credited with the win, while Cole Kenyon (0-1) took the loss.
