HOUSTON, Texas- The SFA Track and Field team will travel to Houston this Friday to kick off their 2024 indoor season. The 'Jacks will take part in the Leonard Hilton Memorial hosted by the University of Houston.
The event starts with the women's high jump at 11 a.m. The field events wrap up at 1:30 p.m. with the men's long and triple jump. For the running events, the women's 60m prelims start at 1:30, and the meet will finish with the men's 4x400mR at 6:00 p.m.
Head Coach Robert Hansen and his staff are eager to see their athletes compete for the first time in 2025. "We're excited to open up at UH tomorrow," said Hansen. "It is time to kick this 2025 season into high gear, and our athletes are itching to get into competition. The meet serves up the right level of competition for a season opener, where we should have a nice group near the front of their competitions coupled with some strong fields for our developmental athletes to compete against. As a staff, we're looking forward to seeing the group work through their early-season processes. This is just us scratching the surface of what we can be this season!"
Players to watch:
• Jamie Richardson, a well-seasoned high jumper and a transfer from Grambling State University, qualified for the NCAA East Prelim last year. She had a strong season last year, highlighted by her third-place finish at the 2024 SWAC Outdoor Championship.
• Mikayla Jones, also a high jumper, is expected to, "represent well," according to Coach Hansen.
• Hunter Murphy is ready to lead the men's squad in the field events. He is a NCAA West Prelim Qualifier and the reigning WAC indoor high jump champion.
• Kira Van Den Ham will lead a strong group of pole vaulters for the ladies, as she is the defending WAC champion. She is joined by Reis Johnson and freshman Madison Goodin.
• Riley Elliott will make his season debut in the 1-mile. He's a former 1500m school record holder.
• Elkana Kipruto, the reigning SLC cross country champion, will also make his debut in the 1-mile.
The Lumberjack's next place to compete will be in Lubbock, Texas as they travel to take part in the Corky Classic. The event is scheduled to take place January 17th and 18th.
