SFA Men look to defend title, SFA women aim to contest for top spot over three days in Nacogdoches
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – All eyes fixate on the Piney Woods as the 2026 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be contested over three days from Thursday, May 14 through Saturday, May 16 inside Stephen F. Austin's Homer Bryce Stadium and Fletcher Garner Track. The Lumberjacks serve as this year's host for the SLC's annual title meet marking the first championship track and field event on the SFA campus since the 2023 Western Athletic Conference championships.
The SFA men look to defend their outdoor league title, while the SFA women aim to contest for the top spot. The Lumberjack men enter the championship as the highest rated SLC team according to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) conference reporting index. The SFA women are rated second behind defending league champion Northwestern State.
SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE TFRI

The SFA men carry 11 top three Southland Conference marks/times into the championship highlighted by six league-best marks. Paul Kiprotich's program record time of 28:30.69 in the 10000m leads the league and is a top 50 mark nationally. It is the second-fastest time ever in the SLC. Samuel Pavan holds the highest national ranking of any Lumberjack with the 21st rated decathlon total of 7445 which is the third-best in program history.
Kiprotich also owns the SLC's fastest 5000m time (14:00.30) this spring nearly becoming the third Lumberjack to dip below 14 minutes in the event ever. Riley Elliott (1500m, 3:40.01) and Keyshawn Garcia (800m, 1:48.21) own school records in their respective events, with Elliott's time standing as the fastest ever in SLC history, while Kason Reed (SP, 17.93m) ranks third all-time in program history.
Four other Lumberjacks hold top three marks/times in the SLC entering the championship meet. Ryan Binskin's times in the 10000m (29:32.51) and 5000M (14:19.70) rank second and third, respectively, in the SLC this season. Jarvis Anderson's 400mH time of 51.08 is the second fastest this spring, while Bryson Williams ranks second with a triple jump mark of 15.65m. Hunter Murphy's 2.15m height in the high jump rates third among all SLC jumpers.
Valentine Jemutai paces the SFA women with two league-leading times coming into this week's championships. Jemutai clocked in at 33:26.94 in the 10000m and 16:27.90 in the 5000m to pace the SLC in each event while both times are program records with her 10000m time the second fastest in Southland history.
Seven additional marks/times by SFA women rate inside the SLC's top three entering Thursday's opening day of championship action. Mercy Kipchumba owns the fourth-fastest 10000m time (35:27.39) in Southland history and the third-fastest in the SLC this season. Her time of 16:28.22 in the 5000m trails only teammate Jemutai. Basia Mitchell holds a pair of top three results with her heptathlon score of 5296 currently the second-highest total in the SLC this spring and her long jump mark (5.98m) ranking third.
Timiejha Furlow (11.58, 100m), Evaline Chepkoech (4:16.41, 1500m) and Garance Dubray (10:46.00, Steeple) are hold the third-best times in their respective events. Chepkoech's effort is a program-best time, while Furlow and Dubray both rank inside the top six all-time.
Thursday's action begins with the opening of the multi events with men's 100m at 9:30 a.m. The women's 100mH signals the start of the heptathlon at 10:15 a.m. Field events begin at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer, while the 1500m trials fire off at 5 p.m. The men's 10000M closes out day one at 8:20 p.m.
Multi events conclude on Friday with the men's 110mH up first at 9:30 a.m. The men's long jump opens field event action on day two with a 12:30 p.m. start and the trials of the women's 100mH prompts evening running at 5 p.m.
Championship Saturday is slated to start at 11 a.m. with the women's discus and men's pole vault. A scheduled 4:55 p.m. national anthem leads into an evening of title-contesting sprints and distance action capped off by the 8:40 p.m. gun of the men's 4x400m relay.
