NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (9-12, 2-8) defeated the visiting East Texas A&M Lions (2-19, 0-10) 79-72 on Monday night at the Sawmill thanks to four different Lumberjacks finishing the night with double-digit points.
The Lumberjacks struck early in the second game of their three game homestand as Keon Thompson would knock down a jumper on SFA's opening possession to put them ahead 2-0 early. Following a 6-0 Lions scoring run, two free-throws from Myles Jenkins and a Nana Antwi-Boasiako dunk knotted the score at six points apiece.
With five minutes gone in the first half and the Lions holding a 10-6 lead, the Lumberjack offense took matters into their own hands as they exploded for a remarkable 15-0 scoring run which was highlighted by seven points from Matt Hayman, four points from Keon Thompson, and four points from Keith Lamar to launch SFA in the lead comfortably at 21-10.
The Lumberjacks kept the points rolling in over the next five minutes as a pair of Lions triples were responded to by an 8-3 scoring run that saw Keon Thompson and Keith Lamar drain three-pointers of their own to keep SFA in the lead 29-19 with five minutes left in the half.
Keon Thompson would rattle off four straight points for SFA to help spark an 11-5 SFA scoring run that was capped off by a Keith Lamar dunk to extend the SFA lead to 39-27 with two minutes left, which allowed the Lumberjacks to hold a 10-point 44-34 lead over the Lions at the half.
The Lumberjacks kept their foot on the gas out of halftime as following a thunderous Keon Thompson dunk to open the second half scoring for SFA, the Lumberjacks three-point party from the first half where they made five triples in the first, carried right over into the second half as the Lumberjacks would hit three consecutive three-pointers courtesy of Matt Hayman and Myles Jenkins to push their lead to 55-39 with five minutes gone in the second half.
Matt Hayman would keep his hot touch going in the second half as he would knock down his third triple of the second half, and his fourth of the game to keep SFA with a steady 14-point lead at 62-48 halfway through the second half. The two schools continued to exchange baskets back-and-forth, however, the Lumberjacks still maintained their lead as they led 71-58 with eight minutes left in the game.
The Lions would start to claw their way back into this one over the next five minutes as a 9-0 scoring run brought the Lions to within seven of SFA at 74-67 with four minutes left, however, Matt Hayman would tie his career-high in three-pointers as he would convert his fifth triple of the night to re-establish the 10-point lead for SFA at 77-67. The Lions would be unable to find the equalizing points over the final two minutes, and SFA was able to ice away their second conference win of the season with a 79-72 win over the Lions.
