THIBODAUX, La. The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (8-10, 1-6) fell on the road to the hosting Nicholls State University Colonels (11-7, 5-2) 73-61 on Saturday afternoon.
The Lumberjacks jumped out to a strong start early in this one as they rattled off the first four points of the game thanks to baskets from Matt Hayman and Chrishawn Christmas. Five minutes into the half the Lumberjacks heated up from downtown as Clayton Southwich and Matt Hayman hit consecutive triples for SFA to give them a 10-8 lead over Nicholls.
Following a 10-2 Colonels scoring run, Matt Hayman and Nana Antwi-Boasiako would record consecutive baskets for SFA with five minutes left in the opening half to cut the Nicholls lead to 24-18. The Colonels would extend their lead to 31-20 with four minutes remaining in the first.
The Lumberjacks would end the first half on a shot of momentum, however, as an 8-2 scoring run fueled by points from Matt Hayman, Myles Jenkins, and Juhlawnei Stone to bring SFA to within seven at 33-26, saw the Lumberjacks score seven of the final 10 points of the first half as SFA entered the half trailing just 39-33.
Nicholls started the second half with an 8-0 scoring run to take a 47-33 lead, which they extended to 56-36 with seven minutes gone in the second half.
At the halfway point of the second half, the Lumberjacks refused to go down quietly as an 8-2 scoring run thanks to points from Myles Jenkins, Keenan Emmanuel, and Dominic Pangonis cut the Nicholls lead to 63-48 with eight minutes left in the game. Chrishawn Christmas and Keon Thompson would take over the Lumberjack offense over the final eight minutes as they combined to score the final 13 points for SFA, however, it would not prove to be enough as the Lumberjacks fell 73-61 on the road to the Colonels.
