EL PASO, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin volleyball team (5-1) suffered their first loss of the 2024 season at the hands of the defending Southland Conference Champions, the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (1-5) in five sets.
The first set was tightly contested until the Ladyjacks went on a four-point scoring run capped off by a pair of kills from Camryn Hill, 9-5. Later SFA went on another four-point spurt which gave the 'Jacks a 14-7 lead. The 'Jacks did not take their foot off the gas as kills from Katherine Holtman and Hill scored two of the four points in their third four-point run of the set. The Lions tried to keep pace with the high-flying Ladyjacks, but SFA pulled away with a 25-19 first set victory.
With the second set tied at 4 apiece, SFA went on an incredible 8-0 run with a kill from Kyanna Creecy, Caroline Kahle, Izabella Ortiz, and Holtman, 12-4. SLU tried to claw their way back, but as the teams continued to trade blows SFA held their lead and secured another 25-19 set victory.
In the third set, both teams were successful in siding out. However, the Lions went on a 6-1 run as they took a 12-6 lead. SLU continued to slowly extended their lead throughout a majority of the set. SFA attempted to mount a comeback with a four-point run with two kills from Holtman and one from Creecy to cut the lead down to two, 23-21. The Lions won back-to-back points to win the third set 25-21.
The trend of tightly contested sets continued in the fourth as neither team held more than a two point lead until the 'Jacks rattled off three points to take a 12-8 lead. SLU fought back with two three-point runs of their own and finished the set in a dominating fashion winning the final seven points of the set, 25-16.
SFA went into the fifth set for the first time since October 1st, 2022. With this young roster for the 'Jacks, only the juniors (Hill, Ortiz, and Jayden Flynn) had ever been in a match that went to five sets. Southeastern Louisiana had all the momentum in their favor as they jumped out to an early 8-3 lead. After switching sides the 'Jacks went on a four-point run to rally from a eight-point deficit to a four-point deficit, 13-9. The deficit was too much for the Ladyjacks to overcome as the Lions won the fifth set by a score of 15-10.
