9/29/2024 4:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
HOUSTON, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (5-2-2, 2-1-0) claimed their first road win of their conference schedule as they defeated the Houston Christian Huskies (3-6-3, 1-1-1) 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Lumberjacks in their second game of a three-game roadtrip were looking to bounce back on the road after a nail biting 2-1 loss to A&M-Commerce. The Lumberjack offense came out swarming the Huskies defense in the first half as they totaled 15 shots in the first half and were rewarded with a goal late in the first half. In the 38th minute, Caelynn January would find Ava Shannon on an outlet pass that Shannon would take and fire a rocket into the top right corner of the net to put SFA ahead 1-0 going into halftime. The second half remained a tightly contested back-and-forth affair between the Lumberjacks and Huskies, however, SFA would gain a critical insurance goal late in the second half as in the 78th minute, Maddie Bowers would continue her scoring tear for SFA as she would fire a rocket into the upper left half of the net to give SFA a 2-0 lead. That score would stand until the end as the SFA defense helped stymie the Huskies offense the rest of the way and give SFA their first road conference win of the season.
