EDINBURG, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Women's Soccer (5-2-2, 2-1-0) close out their three-game road trip as they get set to battle the host UTRGV Vaqueros (5-3-4, 1-0-3) in an early Sunday morning matchup.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks got back in the win column last weekend as they went on the road and shutout the Houston Christian Huskies 2-0 to earn their fifth win of the year. All five wins for SFA this season have come by way of shutout as Sierra McCluer earned her first full career collegiate shutout by scattering two saves over 90 minutes. The Lumberjack offense was relentless against the Huskies as they totaled 23 shots for the game, their third highest shot total for a single game this season, with nine shots on goal while the defense was just as pesky as they limited the Huskies to just seven shots and two shots on goal in the win.
Vaqueros at a Glance:
The host UTRGV Vaqueros will close out their three-game homestand against SFA where they have so far earned a tie against McNeese and a win most recently over HCU. The Vaqueros have been a tough team to beat on their home turf this season as they have compiled a 5-1-2 home record on the 2024 season and have outscored their opponents 17-3 at home. UTRGV has been equally difficult in conference play this year as they have earned a point in all four conference games this season.
Scouting Report:
Maddie Bowers continues to be the model of consistency for the SFA offense this season as she scored her fourth goal of the season and 10th of her career to record her fifth game in her last six games with at least one point. Ava Shannon scored the eventual game winner against HCU to mark her third goal of the season and fourth of her career, while Reaganne Crane continues to pace the Lumberjack offense with 15 points (six goals, three assists) this season.
Savannah Frisby has spearheaded the Vaqueros offens this season as she leads the team in both goals (five) and points (11). However, Frisby is not the only threat on the UTRGV offense as four other players in Lisa Elowsson, Linnea Eld, Jordan Matthews, and Abbie Bailey all have multiple goals as well for the Vaqueros. Rosie Train leads the UTRGV offense with five assists on the campaign.
Series:
Sunday morning's matchup will feature the fifth all-time meeting between these former WAC opponents as SFA holds the all-time record 3-0-1 over UTRGV. In their latest meeting last season, the Lumberjacks and Vaqueros battled to a 1-1 tie in Edinburg.
