EDINBURG, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin volleyball team (10-5, 2-0 SLC) continued the opening weekend of conference play at UTRGV (4-7, 0-1 SLC). SFA looked to extend their win streak to five games while RGV looked to get their first win in Southland Conference play.
The UTRGV Fieldhouse is a familiar place for the 'Jacks as they won the 2022 WAC Tournament at UTRGV. SFA jumped out to a 5-2 lead capped off by a solo block from Katherine Holtman. The Vaqueros cut the lead down to one, but the Ladyjacks went on a mini three-point run to take an 11-7 lead. Both teams traded blows for the rest of the set, but SFA was able to hold their lead and cruise to a 25-18 first set victory. The offense was firing on all cylinders in the first set as the 'Jacks recorded 13 kills and hit .303.
UTRGV kept the beginning of the second set close as they held a slim 4-3 lead. However, that would not last long as SFA then went on a four-point spurt to take a 7-4 lead. The Vaqueros would take the lead back on a mini three-point run, 10-9, but the 'Jacks answered right back with another four-point run, 13-10. Late in the set UTRGV cut the lead down to two, but SFA would finish out the second set with a 6-0 run on their way to a 25-17 second set victory. The Ladyjack offense dominated in the second set recording 15 kills and hitting .387.
Looking for their seventh sweep victory this season, SFA started off the third set with a 4-2 run which included a kill from Holtman and an ace from Brooklyn Shelton. UTRGV would not go down without a fight as they took a slim 9-8 lead before SFA went on a five-point spurt to give the 'Jacks a 13-9 lead which included two blocks from Kyanna Creecy and Holtman. SFA would later go on a 4-0 run to extend the lead to six points, 19-13. With the 'Jacks looking at match point, the Vaqueros did everything in their power to keep playing as they went on a four-point run but eventually gave the 'Jacks a 25-21 third set victory off of a service error.
