Lumberjacks Dominate in Home Opener vs. North American Univ.

Junior quarterback Sam Vidlak got the start for the Lumberjacks and had an impressive start to the season, going eight-for-eight with 288 yards passing and five touchdowns. He accounted for 35 points in the first quarter with sophomore running back Jaylen Jenkins rounding out the scoring for the Lumberjacks with a 10-yard rushing touchdown giving the Lumberjacks a 42-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. All five of Vidlak's passing touchdowns were to different receivers.
Baylor transfer Qualan Jones saw his first action as a Lumberjack getting the start at running back. Jones showed Lumberjack nation what they can expect early as he carried the ball nine times rushing for 121 yards and one touchdown while averaging 13.4 yards per carry. Jones was not the only running back to record big numbers as Jaylen Jenkins ran the ball 13 times for 86 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Vanderbilt transfer Deago Benson also rushed five times for 47 yards and freshman Chris Martinez carried the ball three times for 15 yards. The offensive line did not allow a single negative rushing yard all game.
Returning junior wide receiver Kylon Harris picked up where he left off from last season as he caught four passes for 115 yards and one touchdown while also ripping off his longest reception of the night for 53 yards.
Two Lumberjacks newcomers Josiah Cotton and Trashawn Adams led the defense with four tackles a piece and each with a tackle for loss. Adams also recorded a sack in the victory.
The Lumberjacks new look offense shined as they totaled 675 total yards with 383 passing yards and 292 rushing yards.
The defense should not be overlooked as they were suffocating tonight, allowing a negative five rushing yards and only 45 passing yards the entire game. The North American offense was only able to gain three first downs the entire game and the Lumberjack defense held them to 0-11 on third downs tonight.
The game concluded with two five-minute quarters as both coaches agreed to run the clock in the second half.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action Saturday, September 7th at 6:30 P.M. in Denton, Texas as the Lumberjacks travel to take on the Mean Green of the University of North Texas.
