Lumberjacks Tie with Bearkats in Season Opener

HUNTSVILLE, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (0-0-1, 0-0-0) drew a tie with the host Sam Houston Bearkats (0-0-1, 0-0-0) in SFA's season opener as the two schools ended in a 1-1 tie.
The host Bearkats would draw first blood between the two former rivals as Tiana Johnson of Sam Houston would bury a goal in the 31st minute to give Sam an early 1-0 lead. This score would stand until halftime as both Lydia Sattler and Cassia Souza kept the opposing offenses at bay. The Lumberjacks would draw even midway through the second half as in the 64th minute, Reaganne Crane would execute a perfect corner kick that allowed Ella Morgan to head the ball past Souza and knot the game up at one goal apiece. That would close out the scoring in SFA's season opener as the 'Jacks and 'Kats drew even at the final whistle.
The Lumberjacks outshot the 'Kats 10-9 tonight thanks in part to transfer forward Maddie Bowers who made her presence felt tonight by leading the team with three shots. Meanwhile, Bowers, Jayme Bailey, and Ella Morgan all recorded shots on goal for SFA as Ella Morgan buried her second career goal for SFA, while Reaganne Crane dished out her fifth career assist. Lydia Sattler stymied the Bearkats after the opening goal as she kept Sam Houston off the board the rest of the night and finished with four saves.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action next Thursday, August 22nd when they travel to the University of Houston to battle with the Cougars.
