OREM, Utah. – The Stephen F. Austin Baseball team (3-19, 0-6) closed out their three-game road series against the Utah Valley Wolverines (7-12, 4-2) as the Lumberjacks fell 12-2 to the Wolverines on Sunday afternoon.
Elian Balmaceda drew his fifth start of the season for SFA while Chase Hennessey pitched the first inning for the Wolverines before turning it over to the bullpen. The Wolverines got the scoring started early as they would score four in the bottom of the first to take an early 4-0 lead. Utah Valley would tack on another run in the bottom of the second, before adding another pair in the bottom of the fifth and held a 7-0 lead after three full innings. The Wolverines would add three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-0 lead after five complete innings.
The Lumberjacks would strike in the top of the seventh following a Nolan Brown walk, Dylan Bourgeios would hit an RBI double to left center to score Brown and get SFA on the board trailing 10-1 in the seventh. The Lumberjacks would not be done scoring in the seventh, however, as Cal Martin would hit a single through the right side to advance Bourgeios to third, and Colton Griffin would follow that up by hitting an infield single to score Bourgeios and advance Martin to second to make it 10-2 Wolverines. However, the Wolverines would respond with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom half of the seventh to take a 12-2 lead and institute the run-rule over SFA.
Utah Valley's Jackson Thomas (1-0) was credited with the win, while Elian Balmaceda (1-3) took the loss for SFA. Cole Hill, Peyton Parker, and Dylan Bourgeios all hit doubles for SFA today, as Hill and Bourgeios both recorded their third double of the season, while Parker hit his eighth. Tom Biggs, Cody Fleischer, Cal Martin, and Colton Griffin recorded base knocks for SFA today, while Colton Griffin, Peyton Parker, Tom Biggs, and Nolan Brown all drew walks on the afternoon.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action next Friday, March 22nd when they travel to Arlington to square off with WAC foe UTA in a three-game road series against the Mavericks.
