NACOGDOCHES, Texas. - The Stephen F. Austin Softball team (5-14, 0-0) dropped the first two games of a three-game series with the Houston Christian Huskies (10-6, 0-0) in a Friday doubleheader at the SFA Softball Field.
Game 1: Houston Christian 2, SFA 0
The first game of the doubleheader saw an intense pitching battle between Lyndie Swanson of HCU and Alexis Telford for SFA. The two pitchers kept the game scoreless as neither team was able to scratch across a run in the first seven innings in a game that would require extras to decide the fate of it. Unfortunately for SFA, the Huskies would score a pair of runs in the top of the eighth and Swanson would prevent SFA from tying it as the Huskies claimed a 2-0 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
Kelby Robbins reached base in both of her at-bats in game one as she would smoke a single to left, and draw a walk in her second at-bat. Mikaelah Burkland also recorded a single, while Lexi Benson was able to draw a walk of her own in a quiet offensive game for both teams.
Brittany Coe led the defensive effort with eight putouts, while Lexi Benson finished second with five putouts. Alexis Telford brought her strikeout stuff to the ballpark tonight as she punched out seven Huskies in 7.2 innings pitched and threw 127 pitches for the game.
Game 2: Houston Christian 1, SFA 0
The second game of the doubleheader showcased much of the same pitching duel as the first game did as Ronni Grofman of HCU and Brooke Gainous for SFA pitched phenomenal games in another low scoring affair. In fact, neither school was able to scratch a run across the board in the first six innings. However, the Huskies would strike first in the top of the seventh thanks to a solo homerun and that would be all they needed to defeat SFA 1-0 n a second consecutive pitching duel nail biter.
Four different Ladyjacks recorded hits in the nightcap of the doubleheader as Madison Nguyen, Brittany Coe, Mikaelah Burkland, and Emily Land all recorded base knocks for the 'Jacks. Meanwhile, Kelby Robbins drew a walk for the second consecutive game, while Madison Nguyen stole her second base of the season. Madison Nguyen and Mikaelah Burkland tied for the team lead in putouts with five apiece, while Brooke Gainous threw seven fantastic inning allowing just one run on four hits and striking out a pair of hitters.
Despite the loss, the Ladyjacks defense flashed their leather all night long as in the top of the second, Madison Nguyen fully laid out on a sinking line drive to left field to rob Maggie Childs of a basehit. Nguyen would follow that up with another phenomenal defensive play in the top of the sixth that saw her playing in closer than her usual outfield spot, and reaching over her head on a full extension catch behind her shoulder to rob Juls Garcia of a guaranteed double. Kelby Robbins would get in on the defensive action as she would make a diving stop at the hot corner in the top of the seventh and proceeded to throw out Jasie Roberts at first from her knees to rob Roberts of a double on a Nolan Arenado esque play at third base.
The Lumberjacks will conclude their three-game series with the Huskies tomorrow, March 2nd at the SFA Softball Field with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CST.
