NACOGDOCHES, Texas. - The Stephen F. Austin Softball Team (5-12, 0-0) put an end to their seven-game road schedule, as they return home for a three-game home series hosting the Houston Christian Huskies (8-6, 0-0), looking to build off their most recent 3-1 win over the Northwestern State University Lady Demons.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The SFA Lumberjack Softball team will be playing at home for the first time in 10 days, looking to replicate the result from their last home contest, when they scored 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally against the rival Sam Houston Bearkats and claim an 11-5 win. The Lumberjacks most recent series saw them split a doubleheader against Northwestern State University in the Lady Demons home opener, with SFA dropping the first game before rallying for a win in the nightcap game.
Madison Nguyen is as hot as anybody at the plate right now as she recorded a hit in five of her last six games, including having four multi-hit efforts in that stretch, that has seen her record 11 hits, and six RBIs over her last six games. Not shockingly, Nguyen's batting average has risen considerably as a result of her recent success as she now leads the 'Jacks with a .345 average, while taking the team lead in RBIs with 10 on the season. Amiah Galcatcher and Kelby Robbins have experienced similar levels of success at the plate this season as both have averages over .300 for the season, while Galcatcher leads the team in OPS and slugging percentage with an .811, and .406 mark respectively. Meanwhile, Mikaelah Burkland has showed some of the sneaky pop she has in her bat as she leads the team with two homeruns on the season, while also recording six RBIs. Mallory Webb has been just as hot at the plate as Nguyen has been as she has reached base safely in four of her last six games, highlighted by a 2-2, four RBI effort in a 13-1 blowout win over the University of New Mexico Lobos.
Reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week Aydenne Brown continues to solidify her "ace" status of the SFA pitching staff as she has strung together a pair of impressive pitching performances in her last two outings. Brown has thrown 12 innings over her last two starts, allowing just one run, while picking up a win in both starts, and lowering her season era to a dazzling 2.65, and limiting opposing hitters to just a mere .220 batting average against her. However, Brown is not the only SFA pitcher having a strong season as Alexis Telford and Brooke Gainous continue to form a three-headed monster with Brown in the circle for SFA. Gainous has pitched to the tune of a 3.13 era on the season, has only allowed four walks this season, and most recently locked down her first save of the season in the second game against Northwestern State. Meanwhile, Telford continues to flash her wipeout pitches as she has punched out a team-high 26 batters this season, while throwing 43 innings to lead all Lumberjack pitchers.
The Lumberjack defense has played some of their best defense lately as they have been error free in four of their last five games. Alex Dubose and Lexi Benson have formed a dynamic defensive duo this season for SFA as they have combined for 94 putouts on the campaign. Brittany Coe and Madison Nguyen both have over 30 putouts this season, and Ellie Vance leads the team with 23 assists. All four of Coe, Nguyen, Vance, and Benson have a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage for the season.
Huskies at a Glance:
The Houston Christian Huskies are coming off their first home stand of the season that saw them go an impressive 4-1 at home and improve their overall record to 8-6 on the young season. In their most recent game, the Huskies capped off their five-game home stand with a 6-3 win over cross-town opponent Texas Southern. The Huskies started off the game strong against Texas Southern by scoring three in the first and never trailing after that in the 6-3 win.
Jasie Roberts helped spark the solid first inning for the Huskies as she crushed her second long ball of the season to get the scoring started for Houston Christian. Roberts helped lead a seven-hit effort for the Huskies that saw six different players record a hit for Houston Christian, and five different players drive in a run for the Huskies. Maggie Childs recorded a pair of singles and an RBI for the Huskies, while Roberts, Breana Herrera, Riley Martin, and Heidi Maytum all record an RBI in the win over Texas Southern. Katy Janes secured her third win of the season for the Huskies giving up just one run over six innings, with Ronni Grofman securing her first career save by punching out five hitters over three innings pitched.
Four different Huskies have over eight RBI on the season, as the Huskies get solid production up and down their batting order. Jasie Roberts is the big bat in the Huskies line-up as she leads the team with a .405/1.152/.676 slash line this season, while cranking two homeruns and driving in seven. Haylie Savage leads the team with nine RBIs this season, while having two homeruns of her own and hitting for a .316 average. Meanwhile, Maddy Bailey and Maggie Childs both have eight RBIs on the campaign while combining for 15 hits and seven walks between the two.
Lyndie Swanson has been the leader of the Huskies pitching staff as she has pitched to a 2.84 era this season, striking out 21 hitters over 24.2 innings. Ronni Grofman has formed a nice 1-2 punch with Swanson for the Huskies as she has thrown two complete games this season, pitching in 21.1 innings, and striking out 16. Katy Janes leads the team with 26 innings pitched this season, while punching out a team-high 27 batters.
