NACOGDOCHES, Texas. - The Stephen F. Austin Softball team (5-15, 0-0) lost the series finale to the Houston Christian Huskies (11-6, 0-0) this afternoon by a final score of 2-0.
The series finale of the three-game set between SFA and HCU pitted Katy Janes of the Huskies against Aydenne Brown of the Lumberjacks on the bump for their schools and it provided yet another hard-fought pitching duel as neither team scored a run over the first three innings. The Huskies would strike first on a sacrifice in the top of the fourth to take a slim 1-0 lead, and would get an insurance run in the top of the seventh off their first homerun of the day to help secure a 2-0 win for the Huskies.
Five different Lumberjacks recorded hits today for SFA as Emily Land, Arwin Callaway, and Kaylee Paul all recorded singles for SFA while Lexi Benson and Kelby Robbins both crushed doubles for the Lumberjacks today. Callaway made the most of her plate appearances today as she drew a walk in her second at-bat, while Lexi Benson, Chloe Reneau, and Kaylee Paul all drew free passes as well with Paul drawing a pair of walks in her two at-bats. Paul would show off her elite base running as she also stole second base off her second walk of the day, and is now a perfect 3-3 on stolen base attempts this season. Madison Nguyen and Amiah Galcatcher also both reached base today via hit by pitches as the Lumberjacks did an excellent job putting traffic on the basepaths virtually every inning but were unable to bring any runs home.
Emily Land started behind the dish for SFA today and was busy today as she recorded a team-high 13 putouts to easily lead all SFA players, thanks to a dazzling 12-strikeout performance from Aydenne Brown. Mikaelah Burkland, Madison Nguyen, Arwin Callaway, Kaylee Paul, and Chloe Reneau all recorded putouts as well for SFA while Kelby Robbins recorded three assists this afternoon. Aydenne Brown pitched a superb game for SFA today as she was a workhorse on the mound throwing 126 pitches for the game, recording five flyouts and three groundouts while punching out a season-high 12 batters over seven innings.
The Lumberjacks will be back on the road for their next match-up as they will make a trip to Beaumont, Texas to face-off with Lamar University for a midweek Tuesday evening match-up. First pitch for Tuesday evenings game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CST.
